Workshop title
" Using Technology Actively to Effectively Enhance Learning in the Classroom "

Workshop Presenter
Prof. Carmel McNaught

Brief about workshop
In many of our classrooms today the only use of technology is PowerPoint and occasional showing of information resources on the web – all designed and controlled by the teacher. Yet we know that student learning is better facilitated when students are actively involved in exploring and constructing knowledge themselves. Many students have internet-enabled mobile phones, laptops or iPad equivalents, and we should make use of this rich array of technology for good educational gains. In this workshop, participants will examine a range of strategies to bring active use of technology into formal face-to-face classes. Topics to be covered include:

  • Limitations and opportunities presented by the physical layout of many classroom teaching spaces in schools and universities;
  • How to ensure that students prepare for classes using web-based reading activities or quizzes;
  • Active use of web resources for quick debates in class;
  • Transforming student presentations in class into active learning experiences;
  • Mobile technology in the classroom.

Of course, several of these topics have significant overlap with each other. The size of the workshop group will influence the way in which these topics are explored. Participants will be invited to design some new strategies for actual topics and courses that they teach and, hopefully, these ideas will form part of the workshop records for the whole group.
