Workshop title
" Environmental burden of disease associated with inadequate housing "
Workshop Presenter
Dr. Mazen Malkawi
WHO, Centre for Environmental Health Activities
Brief about workshop
There is a growing body of evidence on the many ways that inadequate housing adversely affects the health of occupiers. WHO recognizes that housing comprises four interrelated dimensions: 1 the physical structure of the house (or dwelling); 2- the home (psychosocial, economic and cultural construction created by the household); 3- the neighborhood infrastructure (physical conditions of the immediate housing environment); and 4- the community (social environment and the population and services within the neighborhood). Each of these four dimensions has the potential to have a direct or indirect impact on physical, social and mental health, and two or more of them combined can have an even larger impact.
While housing conditions are known to influence health, little has been done to examine the scale of that influence. In addition to explaining the relations between health and housing the workshop will bring together housing and health experts to investigate how to quantify the negative health impact of certain housing conditions.

Audience will be postgraduate students as well as researchers from other institutions
Workshop Outcomes
The attendee will understand :
- The logic behind the design of health sciences research.
- Why particular analysis procedures were selected.
- How to critique published research.
- How to use the results in future studies.

Workshop title
" Open Source HIS: Sustainable Solution for Developing Countries "
Workshop Presenter
Prof. Dr. Syed Mohamed Aljunid, Senior Research Fellow
Dr. Nurhizam Safie , Research Fellow
Brief about workshop
Currently, most developing countries have a tight financial budget for their healthcare services and cannot afford the high cost of licenses fees imposed by proprietary healthcare information system providers. Open source healthcare information systems (HIS) offer an attractive alternative to proprietary healthcare information systems.
By using open source HIS, the healthcare providers such as hospitals and clinics can improve the efficiency of services, reduce licensing and maintenance costs in managing information systems as well as catering for future scalability and growth. Among the available open source HIS, GNU Health has been chosen for this workshop because it is a multi-user, highly scalable and centralised system which provides the following functionality:
- Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
- Hospital Information System (HIS)
- Health Information System
Of course, several of these topics have significant overlap with each other. The size of the workshop group will influence the way in which these topics are explored. Participants will be invited to design some new strategies for actual topics and courses that they teach and, hopefully, these ideas will form part of the workshop records for the whole group.
Topics
- Introduction To Open Source HIS and Basic Settings
- Patient Admission Management
Who should attend? (Target Audience)
- Medical Doctors/Clinicians
- Pharmacists/ Nurses
- Medical Lab Technologists
- Healthcare Researchers
- Hospital System Integrators/Developers
- Hospital IT Professionals such as business/system analyst, software developers and programmers
Workshop Outcomes
- To promote awareness on open source HIS advantages and benefits.
- To empower participants in recognising the potential of open source HIS.
- To understand the definition, concept and philosophy of open source software as well as open source HIS.
- To understand the development concepts and architecture of open source HIS.
- To understand the functional of one of open source HIS module, namely Patient Admission Management.
